Configuring Safari on Macintosh
[Return to Stanford Proxy Home]
Note: Use of Stanford's proxy server requires Safari version 1.1 or later running
on Macintosh OS X 10.3 or later.
| SETTING UP PROXING IN Safari
-
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu then choose
the Network icon to open the Network dialog box.
-
In the Show drop-down list, choose
Network Status if it is not already selected.
The type of connection you are using should be highlighted,
for example "Airport", "Built-in Ethernet", or "Internal Modem".
Note that each connection type is configured separately, so your settings for
one type won't apply to the others.
Click the Configure button to open the configuration
dialog box.
Click the Proxies button and under "Select a proxy server
to configure" scroll down
to the Automatic Proxy Configuration option and check it.
Note: For OS X 10.4 you will see these options only
when the default Manually option is selected under "Configure Proxies".
- Enter the following URL in the URL field
under "Proxy Configuration File" on the right:
-
http://library.stanford.edu/apcproxy/suproxy.pac
It's best to copy the URL from these instructions. Make
sure not to include any spaces before or
after the URL.
The dialog box should look like this image (taken from
OS X 10.4) when you
are finished, but note that the image shows only part of the proxy URL.
- Click Apply Now and then close the Network dialog box.
HOW PROXYING WORKS
-
Your browser is now configured to use Stanford's proxy
server for resources that are restricted to Stanford users.
Any other Internet connections will not go through
the proxy server.
-
When you connect to a restricted resource, you will see
an intermediate screen that provides a link you can follow
to the remote site. If you have problems getting to any
pages on the site, please fill out this problem
report form.
TURNING PROXYING OFF
-
You shouldn't need to turn proxying off unless you are
using a laptop that is sometimes connected through the
Stanford network and sometimes connected from off-campus.
-
If you need to turn proxying off for any reason, simply
return to the Network dialog box and uncheck
the Automatic Proxy Configuration option under
"Select a proxy server to configure".
Choose Apply Now to save the changed setting
and then close the Network dialog box.
