Fall 2009 Orientation Tours

Scheduled tours are offered at the Green, Art & Architecture, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Engineering, Mathematical and Computer Science, and Physics Libraries. All other libraries offer tours by appointment. See the complete 2009-2010 Tour Schedule below.

Green Library |Meyer Library |Subject Specific Libraries

Green Library

Green Library is the largest library on campus, and is home to the main humanities and social sciences collection, the Information Center, the Media Microtext Center, Special Collections and University Archives, and many other central library services and resources.

New Students: The Information Center invites new students (and their parents) to tour Green Library, explore world class library collections, and find out how the library can support your research needs. All tours will last for 50 minutes.

   When: Tuesday September 15 at 2:00 p.m.
                Friday, September 18 at 1:00 p.m. & 2:00 p.m.
   Where: Meet at the Green Library East entrance (across from Meyer Library)

Graduate Students: New graduate students are invited to come to Green Library for an online demo of the amazing array of library resources, as well as a librarian-led tour of the building. Each demo/tour will last an hour.

   When:  Monday, Sept. 14 at 3:00 p.m.
                Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 1:00 p.m.
                Thursday, Sept. 17 at 10:00 a.m.
   Where: Meet at the Green Library East entrance (across from Meyer Library)

Note that the Art & Architecture and the Engineering Libraries also offer orientation tours for graduate students. They will be held following the Green Library tours, so students will have the option of attending both the Green Library tour and either the Art & Architecture Library or the Engineering Library tour.

Meyer Library

Tours that cover Meyer Library's services, including the Multimedia Studio, Meyer Tech Desk consulting, the main computer clusters, and the Digital Language Lab are available by request only. Please contact consulting-manager@stanford.edu to request one of these 30 minute tours.


Subject-Specific Tours


Art & Architecture Library

Graduate Students: New graduate students are invited to visit the Art & Architecture Library for a librarian-led tour immediately following the scheduled tours at Green Library. Please meet in the foyer of Cummings Art Building (next door to the Bing Wing of Green Library). An art librarian will also be on hand at Green Library to direct students toward the art building.

Tours Throughout the Year: Orientation tours are required for all declared undergraduate majors and minors in art history, studio art, and film and media studies. Undergraduate majors and minors, please call or email Katie Keller (kkeller@stanford.edu; 724-6700). Orientations for all incoming graduate students in the Department of Art & Art History are scheduled as part of the Department's incoming graduate student orientation. All other students and faculty, please contact Peter Blank (ppb@stanford.edu; 725-1038) to schedule tours or orientations.

Branner Earth Science Library and Map Collections

Orientation sessions for all incoming School of Earth Sciences students are arranged at the beginning of the quarter. Orientations for all other students and researchers are available for the Branner Earth Sciences Library, the Map Collections, and the GIS Services. Contact Julie Sweetkind-Singer (sweetkind@stanford.edu; 725-1102) to set up tours and orientations.

The Library is currently located on the second floor of the Terman Engineering Center.

Mathematical & Computer Science Library

Tours last approximately 40 minutes and will include a brief introduction to the library collection, including online books and journals. Tours will begin at the Circulation Desk. The library is located on the 4th floor of Bldg. 380 in the Main Quad (elevator access only).
