International Women's Day/History Month

In honor of International Women’s Day/History Month we’d like to update the Stanford community on our efforts to collect and provide access to materials documenting Stanford women.

Notable new acquisitions include papers of Cecilia Ridgeway (Lucie Stern Professor of Social Sciences, Emerita in Sociology), Marilyn Yalom (feminist author and historian, senior scholar at the Clayman Institute for Gender Research, and a former professor of French), Frances Morales (former Associate Dean of Students and Director of El Centro Chicano y Latino), and records from Stanford Women in Politics. We also are happy to report that we now have more than 17,000 items available online as part of our Women @ Stanford exhibit. Prominent online collections include the Jane Stanford Papers, Clayman Institute for Gender Research Records, Women’s Physical Education RecordsWomen’s Community Center Records, and papers of Anne Miner (professor emeritus, former consultant to the president on affirmative action for women, and the university’s first affirmative action officer), Myra Strober (labor economist and Professor at the School of Education and at the Graduate School of Business), and Karen Offen (historian and Senior Scholar with the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research). Of particular note are the Jing Lyman Lectures, which include more than 800 audio recordings sponsored by the Clayman Institute for Gender Research.

In addition, several collections of oral histories conducted by the Stanford Historical Society are now available online, including participants of the 2017 Women’s March and Pioneering Women--a project documenting trailblazing Stanford faculty and staff. Many other oral histories of women are available online as part of our Oral History exhibit.

Finally, we are excited to announce the launch of a new project, the Women at Stanford Oral History Project. To better understand the experiences of women at Stanford, volunteers will be collecting oral histories of alumnae from different eras. Interviews will be transcribed and deposited into the Archives, with the support of the Stanford Historical Society Oral History Program and the Stanford Associates. 

All women’s stories are of interest, but the project steering committee is especially interested in speaking with:

  1. women who were involved with activist movements or who led student groups of any kind while at Stanford;
  2. women who engaged in fields of study in which women were the minority, such as science and technology fields;
  3. graduate students from diverse backgrounds; or
  4. women who can provide rich, detailed testimony about their experiences at Stanford, including accounts of student life and reflections on gender roles during their era.

If you would like to be interviewed for the project, or personally know a Stanford alumna with an important story to tell, please let us know. Additional volunteer interviewers are also needed. Training will be provided. Please email Natalie Marine-Street at for more information.
