“Once upon a time, words began to vanish from the language of children. They disappeared so quietly that at first no one noticed – fading away like water on stone.” Thus begins The lost words: a spell book by Robert MacFarlane. In 2007 a sharp-eyed reader noticed that approximately 40 words concerning nature had been dropped from the Oxford Junior Dictionary. Evidently they were no longer being used enough by children to merit a place in the dictionary. Imagine not using terms like acorn, raven, otter... The Lost Words is a spell book conjuring back those glorious words depicting nature. We invite you to lose yourself in its exquisite illustrations and beautiful poetry. Then, while you are in the library investigate our other wonderful books depicting the natural world such as those in:
