What was it like to be a freshman this year, this strangest of years? Learning remotely from her home in Maryland, Stanford freshman Lydia Wei began to feel a bit like Medieval mapmakers, who had to imagine far-off lands that they never visited. In this spirit, she spent her winter break creating a map of the Stanford campus.

It is with profound shock and sadness that we share this devastating news with you.  TJ Cruzada, David Rumsey Map Center’s Services Supervisor, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Sunday, August 23rd, 2020. TJ began working in the libraries as a Computer Support Technician, spent four years as the Circulation Supervisor at the Engineering Library, and two years as the Microforms Stacks Manager in Media/Microtext.

Introduction

A wrench was thrown into the gears of our maps digitization and GIS teams on March 16, 2020 when the shelter-in-place order was announced, and we entered the period of great uncertainty. Without access to the physical maps and digitization lab, our intense commitment to digitizing any map out of copyright was brought to a standstill, and our focus shifted to optimizing the remote experience for working, teaching, and learning.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce Andrea (pronounced An-Drey-Yah) Renner, our new Assistant Rare Map Librarian, who actually started on March 9, 2020, one day before we were all sent packing to our homes due to COVID-19 and the soon to follow shelter-in-place order.
